Do your tiny homes comply with the NZ building code?

From a legal prospective tiny homes are classed as vehicles and not buildings and this makes them exempt from the NZ building code however, True Tiny Ltd believe we have a deep responsibility to ensure that our builds are constructed to the highest standards and within the NZ building code. Our steel frames and aluminium joinery are NZ made and rated for high winds zones and can be provided with a PS1 on request. All other materials are BRANZ appraised. Will I need building or resource consent for a tiny home?

Our tiny homes are road legal trailers and classed as vehicles and not buildings making them exempt from the New Zealand building act. Resource consent may be required particularly if you intend to connect your home to waste services. This varies between regions so we recommend talking to your local council for clarification. In late 2021 MBIE released a new tiny house document intended to be a guide to builders, buyers and local councils. The intent of the guidance document is to help improve understanding of what rules apply to tiny houses and what requirements need to be considered before building/buying a tiny house.
